Is it wrong to use "and other" in my sentence?
"To play that game we would write people's names, the names of cities, animals, countries and other."
 
Yes. You need something like "things" after "other". I'd put a comma after "game". Also, I'd say "... the names of people, cities, animals, countries ...".

Is a comma required before "and other things"?
 
I would use the Oxford comma there. It avoids the reader seeing "countries and other things" as two connected entities. You could avoid it by saying "... we would write things like the names of ...". That way, you can just end with "and countries".
