An example sentence of "fatal" in Longman Contemporary: The gas can be fatal if inhaled in large amounts.

What's the difference if I choose "in a large amount?"
 
It's not a multiple choice test. You're just deciding to use one instead of the other. However, if you want to use "choose" it's no big deal.
