Have I made any mistakes?

Alan suffered a lot from tonsillitis as a child. Doctors advised his parents to take his tonsils out, but they were against. "Tonsils are like the doors to a house. If you remove them, you'll home will be unprotected," his father said. Later, when Alan grew up, he never suffered from tonsillitis again, and he was grateful to his parents for their wisdom.

Fix those two.

Would it be OK if I say this?

"but they were against that."

"your home will be unprotected."
