Agony aunt actually sounds old-fashioned to me. The more modern term is "advice columnist".
Not in the vernacular, it isn't.
It's like saying shrink for a psychiatrist.
I don't know about a male adviser. I've rarely encountered one.

So would I. It's a term I've never heard in AmE.Before I read this thread, if you had used "agony aunt" I would have thought you meant a family member it's agonizing to be around!
