After many years of research, they found the solution at last/ at the end.


My grammar book says answer to the above sentence is at last and I know

both 'at last' and 'at the end' are same in meaning.


Can you please tell me subtle difference between the two clauses?

They are not. 'At the end' is not appropriate in this sentence.

Maybe you were thinking of "in the end"?
