Affect vs Effect

Generally...
a) Affect -- a verb
b) Effect -- a noun
c) Effect -- rarely used as a verb but can be in specific circumstances. Most often mistaken by those wishing to write Affect. Learn (a) and (b) first before attempting the subtle use of (c).

The effect of the tsunami in Japan is that many lives were lost.
The tsunami in Japan affected many lives in Japan.
