If you see any mistakes in the following sentences, can I have your feedback?

( teacher to students about how to write a personal statement)

What has motivated you to choose the subject of your interest ?
What have you done in the past that is relevant to the subject of your interest?

What do you mean by "the subject of your interest"?
Do you intend for those two questions to have the same meaning?

 And what has 'affect' to do with your question. Is it, perhaps 'What has affected your decision about a subject for your research?'
