[Vocabulary] admire and respect

Hi,
Can anyone tell me the difference between "admire" and "respect" in this sentence:

Pettineo has become a sort of domestic art museum in which any visitor can ring a door
bell, go into a house and admire a paiting.

Why I can't use "respect" instead?

respect a painting? no no no

You can respect people, culture, beliefs and such, but what has a painting done to earn your respect? Exactly,.....nothing
