I wonder where does the punishment comes from. If he was in the process of fighting, who could punish him while his opponents were suffering his prolonged offensive?

------------------
Using a technique taught to him by his trainer, former Welterweight and Middleweight Champion Tommy Ryan, Jeffries fought out of a crouch with his left arm extended forward. He was able to absorb tremendous punishment while wearing his opponents down. A natural left-hander, he possessed one-punch knockout power in his left hook, and brawled his way to the top of the rankings.

His opponents. Who else?

In the passage you quoted, it was Jefffies who was being punished, i.e., it was his opponent who was on the offensive.

That is, Jeffries withstood the punishment so that his opponent would finally exhaust/wear out? Then he (Jeffries) won finally?

Yes. Write Jeffries withstood the punishment until his opponent exhausted himself and Jeffries won.
