s1: He returned home safely.

s2: He returned home safe.

Both two sentences is grammatically correct, but I think each sentence has somewhat different meaning. I don't know exactly what different meanings they have.

I think s2 has a quasi-complement.
So in s2, He returned home and he was safe.
In s1, He returned home and the way he returned home was safe.

Is it right? If is it right, in s1 was he safe and sound or not? or was it not known?

s1: He returned home safely.

s2: He returned home safe.

NOT A TEACHER

(1) Like you, I am also waiting for the teachers to answer.

(2) In the meantime, may I most respectfully suggest that you type

"came back safe/safely" in the search box? You may find that thread of

some interest.
