Are there any differences between 'to' and 'as' following abbreviated?

E.g. The United Kingdom is abbreviated to the UK? or as the UK?

thanks

"To" is the right option here.
Abbreviate something to something.

Both are correct."To be abbreviated to something/as something".

In the U.S. you would most likely hear/read, "The United Kingdom is abbreviated as UK". "The United States is abbreviated as U.S." "New York is abbreviated as NY". All without the article, and frequently/occasionally without "as". "New York is abbreviated NY".

In Italy, English teachers are usually taught BE. That is why I have suggested "to" as the right option.
I did not know that "as" is prevalent in the U.S.
So, I'm afraid I have misled tedwonny into believing that the (only) right option is "to".
I'm really sorry.

No worries, Walt!
I just love the flexibility of English!
