a harsh environment with temperatures

Why was this plural form of "temperatures" used? Is it for general idea of temperature or to mean plural "temperatures" like various -10C, -20C, 30C,etc?

ex)The deep sea, at a depth 200 meters or more, is a harsh environment with temperatures below five degrees Celcius.
 
It is to emphasize that it is not a one-time thing. We speak of the temperatures for the upcoming week. The temperature we record on Monday, Tuesday, etc.
