We were so sure that Jerry ____ well on the difficult job. His past experience in other work showed he was the right guy for it. So when he failed, no one believed it.

(A) had done (B) did (C) has done (D) would do

(The Comprehensive Assessment Program for Junior High School Students in Taiwan, 2020)

The answer to the above question is option D. Is option A or option B acceptable to native speakers?

Not in the given context. We were (in the past) so sure that Jerry would do well (in the future with respect to the established time frame) on the difficult job.

In my opinion, you don't need to use past to modify experience.
