A group of farmers were sitting in a village house.

Could you tell me whether it is correct or not. I'd say "was" sitting.

You're right that "A group" is singular and therefore "was" is appropriate. However, you'll hear "were" in this sort of context from a lot of native speakers.
 
Either can work.
A group of farmers was talks about the group as a unit (a single entity).
A group of farmers were talks about the (several) individual farmers.
