Hello.

Is it correct to say "a feeling overcomes" a person?

Are these correct and natural?

1. Anger overcame her and she threw her drink in Joe's face.

2. Jealousy overcame him and he decided to split them up.

3. A sense of calm overcame him and he felt and he didn't care anymore.

4. His passions overcame him and he tried to kiss Lisa. She slapped him away.

5. Self-doubt overcame her and she decided to pull out at the last minute.

6. A sense of regret overcame her as she saw Joe with another woman.

7. Hatred overcame him and he punched Patrick in the face.

The third one seems more like apathy than calm.

The third one seems more like apathy than calm.

Is this okay?

A sense of apathy overcame him and he felt that he didn't care anymore.

And, is it okay to use "overcome" with a "positive feeling"?

Sympathy overcame him and he decided to help them.

A sense of calm overcame me as I walked in the garden.

Those all look good to me. (There's a lot of overcoming going on. ;-) )

I'm gonna push my luck and try other sentences:

1. As he was walking down the street, nothing felt familiar. A sense of homesickness and loneliness overcame him.

2. His parents were arguing loudly and Jack was scared but suddenly he remembered his book. Suddenly, a sense of peace overcame him. Jack went to his room and found refuge in his book.

3. He was driving when grief overcame him. He could see his late wife sitting next to him in front sit. Unable to drive, he stopped the car.

4. We were in the room and everyone was tense. She arrived and gave us a pep talk. A sense of calm overcame all of us.

5. He was giving a speech when stage fright overcame him. He found himself fumbling for words.

6. Stress overcame me during the exam and I messed it up badly.

1. As he was walking down the street, everything felt strange and unfamiliar. A sense of homesickness and loneliness overcame him.

My revision says the same thing but does it differently.

Some would say that strange and unfamiliar are two things that are the same thing, but in this case I think they reinforce each other.

As you can see, I removed the second suddenly. Too much suddenness!

3. He was driving when grief overcame him. He could see his late wife sitting next to him in the front seat. Unable to concentrate on his driving, he pulled over and stopped the car..

He could drive. He just couldn't focus well enough to drive safely.

4. We were in the room and everyone was tense. She arrived and gave us a pep talk. A sense of calm overcame all of us.

Aren't pep talks supposed to pep you up?

I feel for him.

You probably felt unprepared because you hadn't studied enough.

Better?

We were in the room and everyone was tense. She arrived and gave us a reassuring speech. A sense of calm overcame all of us.
