The phrase underlined is unclear to me. Please, explain.


"He said the improving performance of the non-oil sector has put Nigeria on a favorable footing to withstand the global shock". ​

I think the phrase means to be well positioned to take advantage of something. Or be better prepared for an event.

So in this instance, Nigeria is on a favourable footing due to the performance of the non-oil sector. Presumably the article is something to do with the economy and how Nigeria will be able to manage during the global shock.
