Is "long distances" preferable in the context? If it is, could you explain why?

5JJ,

I knew about singular and plural, but I wasn't quite sure why you preferred one to the other in that context. I'm wondering if I shouldn't have said, "I know what singular and plural are," then. I apologize for not making myself understood well.
