I was writing my colleague a conversion. I was confused as to which one I should write. Between the discussions, the word was an easy task. I am not confirmed yet. Please elaborate on the grammar.

The rule is simple. When choosing between 'a' or 'an', it depends on what the first sound of the following word is. If the following word begins with a vowel sound, then choose 'an'. If it begins with a consonant sound, use 'a'.

In your case, it should be 'an easy', because the word 'easy' begins with a vowel sound.

Note that I said first sound, not first letter. The first letter may be silent or make a different sound than it normally would. For example:

An hour (because the 'h' is silent, and the first sound you actually hear is a vowel)
A university (because the first letter is pronounced more like a consonant 'y')

I assume you were writing either an email or a text message. In either case, you are in charge of only part of the conversation.
